The Ultimate Bergen County Mother’s Day Checklist

It’s Springtime in Bergen County (finally!) and that means that Mother’s Day is right around the corner!  If you plan on impressing a special mother in your life, then we have a Bergen County exclusive Mother’s Day checklist for you! This is the perfect list to give you ideas on what to buy Mom for Mother’s Day or where to bring Mom for the best Mother’s Day Brunch in Bergen County! PS – This list is good for impressing your actual mother or the mother of your children… or a grandmother… or all of the above!  (Hey, we’re here to help!) Here’s our cheat sheet for this year’s Mother’s Day: If the Mom in your life love’s sweets and pastries, then show up on her doorstep with a box of mini pastries from Rispoli Pastry Shop in Emerson or a crumb cake from B&W Bakery in Hackensack.  Think crumb cake is too passé?  Well, then you’ve never had one from B&W! Trust us – it’s awesome! Flowers go a long way!  Unless they are allergic to them, your Mom might really appreciate a custom bouquet of Spring flowers for Mother’s Day!  And in the flower department, you are in luck, because many towns throughout Bergen County have great florists!  (If you have a favorite, please let know in the comments section below!)  Our favorite springtime flowers are roses, tulips, peonies, carnations and lilies! Don’t forget a card!  If you have kids, a hand-made card is the best and is guaranteed to make Mom’s heart brim with joy.  No kids?  Stick with Hallmark, but don’t forget to add your own little personal message.  It’s nice to write a little note to let your Mom know how much you love them, but also tell them why they are so important to you.  There are a bunch of Hallmark and specialty cards stores throughout Bergen County, but we also like Papyrus Greeting Cards & Stationary. You can find one in The Shops at Riverside in Hackensack or in The Garden State Plaza in Paramus. Treat Mom to the best Mother’s Day Brunch in Bergen County! Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn know how to do Mother’s Day!  The Mother’s Day Brunch Buffet at Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn is delicious and is sure to please any Mom no matter how high her standards!  Seatings for this Bergen County Mother’s Day Brunch start at 11AM on Sunday, May 10th 2015 and go throughout 3PM.  Brunch is served in the Upstairs Ballroom and is moderately priced at $38.95 for Adults and $20.00 for kids.  The Mother’s Day Brunch Buffet is extremely popular, so make sure you get your reservations before they are gone! Have a chocolate lover on your hands? What Mom wouldn’t like a box of chocolate from one of Bergen County’s top chocolatiers?  There are plenty to choose from including Critchley’s Chocolate in River Edge, Hanna Krause in Paramus and Conrad’s in Westwood. Mom’s love a good memory-maker and what creates fantastic memories better than a family photo shoot!  There are beautiful public places throughout Bergen County that are perfect for a Spring photo shoot!  Call you favorite photographer and have them meet you there for an impromptu photo session! (Just make sure that you agree on the terms first. Some photographers are serious about their copyrights...

Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn is Linked to Some Awesome Thanksgiving History!

Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn is Linked to Some Awesome Thanksgiving History!

Did you know that Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn is linked to some awesome Thanksgiving Day American History?  Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn is widely recognized as one of the best Italian restaurants in Bergen County, but it is also situated on a historic site that was incredibly important to our young nation during the Revolutionary War. On November 20, 1776, General George Washington and the American Garrison of Fort Lee crossed the Hackensack River to avoid the invading armies of the British.  The bridge located at Historic New Bridge Landing made this retreat possible.  New Bridge served as a battleground, encampment ground, military headquarters and intelligence-gathering post throughout the American Revolutionary War. George Washington later used homes in the area as his headquarters in 1780.  The area of the bridge and the historic properties can still be seen today.   So what’s the connection to Thanksgiving? The historical document that gave birth to our Thanksgiving Day holiday is called the Thanksgiving Proclamation.  It is an actual document that signed following a resolution of Congress by then President George Washington on October 3, 1789.  The Thanksgiving Proclamation declared that Thursday the 26th of November 1789 would be a day of “public thanksgiving and prayer” devoted to “the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.” From that day forward, the final Thursday of November became devoted to public thanksgiving and prayer throughout the different regions of our young country.  In 1863, Abraham Lincoln took the proclamation a step further, and made Thanksgiving Day a permanent national holiday. Think about it like this: If it wasn’t for the New Bridge, General George Washington may not have escaped the invading British troops in 1776, and never would have had the opportunity to be our Nation’s first President – and later sign the Thanksgiving Proclamation! So no New Bridge, no Thanksgiving…    pretty interesting, right? You can read more about it or make your reservations for Thanksgiving Day Dinner at Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn right here: Learn More Here No matter what your plans, we hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a Happy Holiday...

In Search of Chicken Parmigiana in New Jersey?

Posted by on Nov 2, 2014 in Dinner Menu, Recipes, The New Bridge Inn Blog | 0 comments

In Search of Chicken Parmigiana in New Jersey?

Nothing screams Italian-American food like Chicken Parmigiana and at Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn, some nights we can’t even keep up with the orders… but it may shock you learn that Chicken Parmigiana is not really a traditional Italian dish. In fact, many food historians suspect that Chicken Parmigiana is actually an international variation of an old traditional Sicilian recipe called “Parmigiana di Melanzane,” which refers to a fried and then baked eggplant dish.  The story goes that Sicilians would dip slices of eggplant in a thin layer of beaten egg, bread and fry them, top them with slices of parmesan cheese and home-made tomato sauce before finally baking them in the oven. Food historian have found writings that describe this method of cooking that are over two hundred years old! The word “Parmigiana” technically means “from Parma,” but the town of Parma is actually in Northern Italy and is, in fact, nowhere near Sicily!  Also, “Parmigiana” has nothing to do with the “Parmesan” cheese sometimes used to make the dish.  Somewhere along the line, Italian-American immigrants in places like New Jersey, New York and Toronto started making their own version of the dish using breaded chicken cutlets, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.  As you can see, it is no wonder that the origins of Chicken Parmigiana have been widely debated among Italian-Americans from all over the country!  In fact, there are many dishes that we enjoy in the United States that just cannot be found in Italy! There is one thing we certain of though; and that’s where you can get the best Chicken Parmigiana in North Jersey!  And that’s right here at Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn! What’s that?  You can’t make it to our famous little Italian Restaurant in Bergen County?  Don’t sweat it!  You can make Sanzari’s Chicken Parmigiana at home! Here is our Best Chicken Parmigiana in New Jersey Recipe: INGREDIENTS 1 cup plain breadcrumbs 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese (not the fake stuff) 1/4 tsp dry thyme 1/4 tsp dry oregano 1 tsp fresh parsley, finely minced 8 chicken cutlets (about 1 1/2 pounds total) Salt and freshly ground pepper 1 cup of flour 2 large eggs 3 cups your favorite tomato sauce, with extra if serving over pasta 1/4 cup olive oil 16 ounces mozzarella cheese, fresh is ok, but shredded or deli sliced melts better, cut into thick slices   DIRECTIONS Pre-heat oven broiler. Set up three shallow bowls or pie plates next to stovetop.  In first bowl, combine breadcrumbs, parsley, oregano, thyme and Parmesan in a shallow bowl.  In second bowl scramble two eggs.  In third bowl, add pinch of salt and pepper to flour.  Season both sides of chicken with salt and pepper. Dip chicken in the flour, then beaten egg, and then dredge in breadcrumb mixture, turning to coat both sides evenly. Spread half of tomato sauce onto the bottom of a 10-by-15-inch baking dish. Heat 4-6 tablespoons of oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Place 4 breaded chicken cutlets in skillet; cook until golden, 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Using a spatula, transfer browned cutlets to baking dish, placing them on top of sauce. Repeat with remaining oil and cutlets. Top each cutlet with a heaping tablespoon of tomato sauce and slice of...
